These are maps of Proposed & Unfinished Highways from 1976 - Present
These I scanned from a Bicentennial Map of NJ... At this point in time New Jersey had such a promising future of a well connected and smartly planned transit system... what happened???
There are also pictures from a 1979 map.

I hope you enjoy these pics... I enjoyed posting them... :-)

I-287 Unfinished & Proposed (1976) - This highway has since been completed, however it has taken on a much different path. It took nearly two decades but this section was finished in 1994.

Route 92 Freeway "Proposed" (1976) - This highway is still being fought for, even after constant attacks from environmentalists. Its path has changed so much over the years, by now it will only be an extension of the NJ Turnpike from Exit 8A to Route 1.

A 1971 Proposal by the DOT of what I-95 & I-295's interchange may have looked like... (Exit 75) the white divided road is most likely Route 31.

Route 18 Proposal & Construction (1976) - As you can see by this map Route 18 was only a short highway stub which terminated at Deal Rd in Tinton Falls. It was extended in 1987 to Shafto Rd and the remaining traffic had to exit at Route 36. The missing link was finally completed in 1991 with the construction of the massive bridges over the Parkway. However one part of Route 18 still remains unfinished...

I-195 Unfinished & Route 38 in Belmar (1976) - It's hard to imagine traveling from western NJ to the shore without the help of I-195. It was finished to Route 9 in 1979, and eventually completed to Route 38 in 1981. Since the two stubs of Route 38 would never be connected, the state renamed it 138 in the mid 1988.

Route 24 Unfinished & Proposal (1976) - Here the map shows Route 24 was to extend past I-287 and reconnect with old Route 24 as well as create an extension to Route 10 called Route 178, thusly creating a Morristown Bypass.

Route 20 & 21 Proposals (1976) - The highway stub off the Garden State Parkway has since been redesignated Route 19 and Route 21 has been completed, but not as far as this map shows it going...

I-278 (1967)

I-95 Freeway "Proposed" (1976)

Route 29, 129, I-195, & I-295 Proposals (1976)

Route 31 Freeway "Proposed" (1976)

Route 90 Freeway "Proposed" (1976)

Camden & Philly Proposed Interstates (1967)

I-895 Freeway "Proposed" (1976) - This highway started out as a connection to Route 72, to provide a better link to the southern Ocean County area. But due to opposition from enviromentalists, it was shortened to just a proposed stub between I-95 in Pennsylvania and I-295 in New Jersey. However it didn't take long for the environmentalists to stomp this highway connection into oblivion.

Route 74 Freeway "Proposed" (1978) - This highway as shown here would have linked Route 35 & Route 18. This important east to west connection would have greatly improved traffic in the surrounding area. Even though this route number remains in the logbooks, there are no plans of constructing it in the near future.

U.S. 322 Freeway "Proposed" (1979)

Gov. Alfred E. Driscoll Expressway "Proposed" (1979) - This highway has since had its right of way sold, but it would have been an important connection between the Garden State Parkway & the NJ Turnpike. Trucks must now use Route 18 North to access the Turnpike.

This map shows I-278 and I-878 with I-95 and I-78 east of the GWB.

I-695 Freeway Connection "Proposed" - Was to link the proposed I-95 with I-287, to create a bypass of New York City.

Route 55 Unfinished (1976) - This highway has been the neglected of the bunch. Here it ends at both Port Elizabeth & Franklinville, since then it has been finished North to Route 42 near Camden. However the southern section to Cape May still remains unbuilt, and will probably never be built, despite the many advantages it would provide.

This map from 1968 seemed to be jumping the gun on the Route 35 freeway and decided to label it as such.

Freehold Bypass (Completed 2003) - Nearly 4 decades in the making, the NJDOT finished the long anticipated Route 33 Freeway around Freehold in Spring of 2003. Despite the Howell Rd exit remaining closed for safety reasons. The bypass can be used by through traffic to avoid downtown Freehold. When comparing these two scans, one from 1967 and the other 2003, the bypass stayed pretty true to it's original path when finally built.

Route 18 (Proposed Brielle Extension) - This is from a brand new map, and it still shows the proposed path of Route 18. NJDOT should reconsider finishing Route 18 south to Brielle, as traffic at it's current terminus continues to increase with every passing day.

Route 18 (Future Extension...???) - With the addition of new housing developments and new shopping malls, as well as the ever popular beaches, an extension of Route 18 is desperately needed. It will be difficult to integrate it with the current Brielle intersection, but it can be done. In the maps above, "Mapquest" had put these on a store locating site. I guess they got over-ambitious..., I quickly snatched them up, but in this form Route 18 would have been a commuter's nightmare trying to access it from the Brielle Circle, however if Route 18 were originally built from here as intended, you can bet your dollars that they wouldn't eliminate it to Route 138. They would have found a way to design a new interchange to include Route 18.
